GFF All Stars hold first practice session ahead of historic game
Face Cray Wanderers FC tomorrow
Under the watchful eyes of Guyana Football Federation Head Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover assisted by England based coaches Peter Barry and David Johnson (goalkeeper) the full strength Guyana Football Federation All Star squad held their first practice session at the Trinity High School Artificial Field located in the school’s compound, Croyden, London.
Many of the players traveled from the USA, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana to link with the England based players ahead of tomorrow’s historic game against Cray Wanderers FC, the second oldest club in the world which would be celebrating its 150th Anniversary.
The eager Golden Jaguars went through their paces in nippy overcast conditions backed up by a light drizzle. It’s summer time in England but the weather was not summer like to many of the players especially the 5 travelling from Guyana, Ronson Williams, Eon Alleyne, Clive Andries, Glenorvan Edmonds and Mustapha Haqq.
Coach Peter Barry guided the players through some technical skill drills before they were involved in some small sided games 4v4; 8v8 and 11v11 with the main aim of organizing defensively, according to Coach Dover.
Commenting on the session, Dover said: “The response was good despite a number of the players arriving just yesterday morning, mere hours before the first session. The mat like turf was a bit challenging to the new comers but they adapted well and looked good in the session when we did transition of offence to defence.”
Dover, noted that before himself and Barry name the team for tomorrow, they will have another session today at 12:00hrs English time; 07:00hrs Guyana time.
“With so many talented players to choose from it will be challenging for us to arrive at the 18 man squad but Coach Barry and myself will sit and come up with the best possible team.”
“I would like to say that it was a good experience working with Barry who played in Guyana with Santos FC, Thomas United and the University of Guyana.”
A total of 23 players attended yesterday’s session and are all expected to be at training today.
Among the players are goalkeepers Jason Lloyd, Chris Westman and Ronson Williams.
Defenders – John Rodrigues (Captain), Chris Bourne, Jake Newton, Dominic Ryan, Travis Jones, Harry Wilson.
Midfielders – Alani Mounter, Chris Nurse, Ricky Shakes, Sean Cameron, Kabir Khan, Eon Allayne, Glenorvan Edmonds, Mustapha Haqq.
Forwards – Clive Andries, Fabeon Brown, Shawn Beveney, Scott Nurse.
